*James Salter moved in this year (1824) to 34, Grand Parade, his workshops were formerly at 2 Tuckey Street. He entered his mark at Dublin in 1827. In 1841 he emigrated with his family to New Zealand on board the 'Sophia Pate', but during the voyage the ship sank and all were lost, save one boy. (See Jacksons p.721)

This very rare old English pattern basting or serving spoon was for sale on a online auction site . The asking price was $700 American dollars. I dont know if it was sold but it shows a high quality of workmanship
The hallmarks ( a mark placed on an article to indicate quality, purity etc ) are Irish silver with the date letter

The makers initials are JS which are the initials for the Cork silversmith James Salter. Cork did not have an assay office ( office to estimate the metal content in ores ) and because of this their silver was assayed in Dublin. Some Cork silver was not assayed but just marked with the Makers Mark and the word Sterling. As this spoon is also monogrammed and was part of a cutlery set, the maker would have insisted on having the collection assayed in Dublin before parting with his/her cash.

The spoon is in excellent condition. It is 9 1/4 inches long. It weighs 2.50 ounces or 69 grams.

The reason I mention this is that James Salter had a large quantity of plate with him on his voyage to New Zealand in the Sophia Pate

plate ( was any metal article ,utensils or object especially made of silver or gold )
